Founder & President

When our son Eric was diagnosed with autism at 29 months, everything changed for my wife Polly and me. We had to help our child, and the way forward was unclear. There were forks in the road, and well-meaning people offered conflicting advice. What to do about school, about therapy, about planning for the future — it seemed overwhelming.

But we dug in.  Eric received ABA, went to school, and, with the help of too many to name, learned and grew.  It wasn't always the experience that our friends with typically-developing children had, but as he grew, our hope did, too.

Now it’s 17 years later,  and Eric is working towards having a job.  He also sings, plays tennis, and like other young adults, is finding his place in the world. Along the way, we got involved, we learned more, and now we’ve had the opportunity to found New Connections. It is my profound hope that New Connections can be a source of help and of hope for families just like my own.

My journey to New Connections began in a swimming pool. As a college sophomore with uncertain career plans, I taught adaptive swimming lessons to a boy with multiple disabilities. He couldn’t use his legs and he was terrified at the prospect of being immersed in any amount of water. This made bathing very difficult for both him and his family. We worked through the semester, making progress in small increments, until we finally made it into the pool together. The experience was so gratifying for me and so impactful for the family that my course was set.

I became a classroom aide, then a Special Education teacher, and that experience led me to study for the BCBA exam. With a move from Virginia to Nashville mixed in, I found great reward in helping students and families with behavior challenges in both school and home settings.

I am so pleased to be a part of New Connections, which gives me the opportunity to work more directly with children and families.  I find no greater satisfaction than helping improve the lives of individuals with behavior challenges.

Stay Current

Diagnoses such as autism are extremely difficult and often devastating for families. We know this because we’ve lived it ourselves. All facets of family life are affected. Activities such as going to a restaurant, attending church, or taking a vacation are made exponentially more difficult. Friendships can be hard to maintain, marriages suffer, and stress can be unrelenting and overwhelming. We are committed to working with families to make and execute a successful plan, because at New Connections we know there is hope for better days ahead. How We Help

Working with our families, we assess each client and incorporate family goals and input into designing each individual program. Intensive 1:1 therapy sessions can then take place in our clinic or in a client’s home.Upon teaching new skills and behaviors, we place a strong emphasis on generalizing into home, school, and community settings. We are especially dedicated to partnering with schools, churches, and others in the community to benefit and serve our clients.
